With the closing of Kings Highway Elementary and Lower Macungie Elementary schools in June 2005 and the change to a K to Grade 5 structure in all elementary schools, it was necessary to reconfigure the elementary attendance areas for the 2005 2006 school year. When the redistricting project was undertaken, several guidelines and parameters were considered when establishing the attendance areas.
- All elementary schools will be developed to eventually provide for a K-5 grade structure.
- District school buildings will be developed to facilitate the delivery of the educational program to a level of fair distribution of, and access to, educational resources and facilities that are conducive to learning.
- All elementary schools will be designed for a minimum of two classes per grade level.
- The district will develop elementary sites that best serve each regional population.
In addition, the following parameters were given consideration when developing the new elementary attendance areas:
- Each elementary boundary will be comprised of a contiguous geographic area to the extend possible given that two of the elementary buildings are situated side-by-side on one campus.
- Each elementary school will be considered to be a neighborhood school.
- Students living within identified developments will be treated as single units.
- Building enrollments will be balanced related to the capacity of each of the buildings.
- Revisions to the current attendance areas will disrupt as few students as possible.
- Provisions will be made in each attendance area to allow for new developments and growth in enrollments beyond the current actual student enrollment.
- Whenever possible, existing private daycare providers will be distributed among the six attendance areas.
- Whenever possible, special education students will be assigned to their home school.
