EPSD Summer Fitness Camp 2014 posted on April 08, 2014 7:39am

Fitness camp is a five-week program available for students entering grades 1-6. The camp will be held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from Jully 8th through August 7 at Willow Lane Elementary. Parents/Guardians will have to provide to their own transportation.

There will be two sessions:

Session 1: 9:30am - 11:00am
Session 2: 11:15am - 12:45pm

The Emmaus High School Counseling Department would like to invite high school students and parents to the 2nd Annual Emmaus High School College Fair to be held on Wednesday, April 30, from 6 - 8 pm in the EHS gymnasiums.

Representatives from over 100 colleges, technical schools, as well as several branches of our military, will be in attendance. This is a great opportunity for underclassmen as well as upperclassmen to research postsecondary options. All Lehigh Valley high school students and parents are welcome to attend. The Board of School Directors of the East Penn School District will be voting on Monday, March 24, 2014, on the appointment of Dr. Michael Schilder as the next Superintendent of Schools. If approved, Dr. Schilder will succeed Dr. Thomas Seidenberger, who is retiring on July 1, 2014 after seven years of outstanding service.

Dr. Schilder began his career as a teacher in Central Bucks School District in PA and became an elementary principal in Hopewell, NJ. He was an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in both West Orange School District and Bernards Township School District. Schilder became the Superintendent in Clinton Public School District and remained there for 8 years.

He then assumed the Superintendent position in the 9,000-student district of Bridgewater-Raritan, where he served for almost 7 years.

Dr. Schilder stated, "I've been impressed with the district pride shown by the Board, administrative team, teaching staff, and parents. People are committed to maintaining areas of excellence and making improvements where needed. Everyone I met was thrilled to be a part of East Penn and so am I."

Dr. Schilder and his wife live in Milford, NJ and have two grown children living in Washington, DC and Brooklyn, NY.

East Penn Board approves a Series of 2014 bond sale to refund 2009 GOB issue and save the district a net $589,992.86 over the life of the issue, which will be paid off in 2028.

EPSD Make-up Days/PSSA Extension posted on February 24, 2014 6:27am

At Monday evenings School Board Meeting, East Penn Administration will be recommending a change to the 13-14 school calendar. If approved by the School Board, Monday, April 21st will become an instructional day for students. Please check back on Tuesday to see if this change was approved by the Board.

Snow Make-Up Days: 4/17, 4/21 (if Board Approved), 6/10, 6/11, 6/12, 6/13, 6/16, 6/17 (Students Last Day)

In addition, PDE has made it optional for school districts to extend the PSSA Math/Reading/Writing Testing Window for the 13 - 14 school year.
East Penn SD PSSA Math/Reading testing will take place from March 31st - April 4th.

East Penn SD PSSA Writing testing will take place from April 7th - April 11th.

Please contact your child's building with any questions or concerns regarding this matter.FYI - PSSA Science and Keystone Exams windows will not change.

PDE has made it optional for school districts to extend the PSSA Math/Reading/Writing Testing Window for the '13 - '14 school year. East Penn SD will be taking advantage of the extended window PDE has offered. A final decision on dates will be made shortly. Please continue to check our websites and social media sites for the extended testing window dates. FYI - PSSA Science and Keystone Exams windows will not change.

The purpose of these meetings is to give all attendees an opportunity to meet the two candidates for the position of Superintendent of Schools and to complete comment sheets to the Board of School Directors to review. This is a requirement of Act 1 and is mainly used in the determination of the exceptions that we may qualify for. It is also a starting point for our budget discussions with the Board. The final budget always looks very different from this when it is adopted at the end of June. We will work hard to reduce the tax increase and narrow the gap between revenues and expenditures. Any subsequent school closing makeup days will be added to the end of the school year (6/10, 6/11, 6/12).

Early Dismissal (Secondary Schools) - The early dismissal scheduled for 11AM on February 13th is rescheduled to February 14th.

Make-up Days posted on January 08, 2014 10:53am

The approved school calendar lists the sequence for make-up days. Since the district exceeded its two-day allotment, the changes to the school year are as follows:

January 2, 2014 school cancellation will be made up on Friday February 14, 2014

January 7, 2014 school cancellation will be made up on Thursday April 17, 2014

Since we have used up the two snow days built into the school calendar, it is most likely that we will use Friday, February 14, 2014 as a make-up day if we have any additional school closings from now through February 13th.
