Shoemaker Elementary School is located in the beautiful community of Macungie, PA which is approximately 10 miles outside of Allentown and 50 miles Northwest of Philadelphia. It shares a campus with Macungie Elementary School and Eyer Middle School. Shoemaker is a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school with approximately 670 students, 47 professional staff members and 37 support staff members. We have 28 classes inclusive of 4 sections of half-day kindergarten, 5 sections of first grade, 5 sections of second grade, 5 sections of third grade, 5 sections of fourth grade and 4 sections of fifth grade. Additionally, our school has 7 specialized classrooms for special education (learning support, emotional support, gifted and English Language Learners).
Shoemaker Elementary School opened its doors in 1970 and over the last 42 years has undergone several changes in its design. At one point in history, students from Alburtis, Kings Highway, and Lower Macungie Elementary Schools, all K-2 programs, fed into Shoemaker which housed grades 3- 6. In 2005, renovations were made and Shoemaker reopened as a kindergarten through fifth grade school. In 2006, the kindergarten classes moved to the Lower Macungie Kindergarten Center and reentered the Shoemaker family in 2010. Shoemaker's unique architecture is configured to house each grade level in a pod area, with removable walls between 4 of its 6 classrooms making these spaces ideal for team teaching.
As the school transitioned from an intermediate building to a kindergarten through fifth grade building, it blended rich traditions from the past with new initiatives from the present which make it the special place it is. Entertaining choral productions, a Veteran's Day Program, our student Mile Club, the fifth grade Community Service Club, the Art Club and the monthly whole school pride meetings are a few examples of that rich blend.
The video below depicts just one of the special relationships created between the Shoemaker Art Club and the community. It demonstrates the value of collaborations and working together to achieve success. It illustrates the commitment of our students, families, staff and community of whom we are so proud.
Shoemaker School utilizes building-wide "themes" each year. Some of those have included: "Reach for the Stars," "Shoemaker Dives into Learning," "Plant Seeds of Kindness. Plants Seeds of Learning" and "Superteam! Together Everyone Achieves More!" Additionally to building our school culture, Shoemaker staff and students take great pride in our academic achievement. Guided by the East Penn School District curriculum, the school offers academic programs that both challenge and support all students. Teachers regularly integrate technology utilizing electronic whiteboards and internet resources and applications to enhance instruction. Several teachers integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math using an inquiry project based approach to teaching science.
In addition to academic excellence, Shoemaker is especially proud of its philanthropic efforts and involvement in the community organized through our Community Service Club and Angel Network. Our students, families and staff participate monthly in various charitable contributions. We have raised monies for our families in need as well as children undergoing medical treatment. We have contributed to local food banks, shelters, world events and disaster relief just to name a few. Each day, the Shoemaker Family demonstrates kindness and generosity by reaching out to improve our world and the lives of people in need.
