Lincoln Elementary School, one of seven elementary schools in the East Penn School District and home of the Lincoln Lions, houses 430 students in Kindergarten through Grade Five. The full-time staff includes seventeen classroom teachers, three Learning Support Teachers, and an Instructional Support Teacher, Guidance Counselor, School Nurse, 17 support personnel, and one administrator. The three-floor facility consists of seventeen classrooms, three small group instruction rooms, an all purpose room, music and art rooms, library, outdoor learning garden, and large paved and grassy play areas.
The original Lincoln Building, an eight room structure, was erected in 1928 and served as the junior high school for Emmaus for many years. Mr. Luther Souders served as the principal at the Lincoln Building during that time period. In 1952 Lincoln, along with the rest of the Emmaus schools, joined Alburtis, Lower Macungie, and Macungie to form the East Penn Union School District.
In the fall of 1955 when the “new” high school opened in the district, Jefferson, the old high school, became the junior high and Lincoln became an elementary school with a grade one through six configuration. The large right side addition to the building was opened in the fall of 1960, while the addition to the left was completed in the fall of 1996. Probably the longest serving principal in the building was Mr. Ira Leeser, who spent 48 years in education and worked as a sixth grade teaching principal from 1955 to 1970. During that time there were fierce football rivalries between the fifth grade Lincoln Eagles and the sixth grade Lincoln Bears.
Today the school remains a very unique and diverse neighborhood school on the normally quiet Seem Street in Emmaus. In the morning and the late afternoon, however, the front of the school is teaming with bus activity and the newly designed Lincoln Learning Garden area is brimming with parents, siblings in strollers, and family pets on leashes, assembled to bid farewell before school and to eagerly greet their children at the end of the day.
From the first day in September, through the last day in June, the school is filled with academic challenges that include a focus on STEM and Project based learning, along with special events and unexpected surprises from the outstanding staff and dynamic Parent Teacher Organization at Lincoln.
The students at our school are encouraged to follow three Pawsitive Steps: Be Respectful; Be Responsible; and Be Safe through our school-wide positive behavior support program (SWPBS). SWPBS is a team-based proactive approach to teach, monitor, and support appropriate school behavior for all students. The program focuses on preventing problem behavior of all students at the school-wide, classroom, non-classroom and individual levels.
