A History of Community Learning at Wescosville Elementary School-
Wescosville Elementary has seen many different changes over the last twenty years. There have been numerous changes to the building, the school grounds, and to the composition of the staff. There have also been many changes to the age groups of students who have walked these hallways over the years. One thing that hasn't changed is our faculty and staff's commitment to excellence in education and its focus on the mentoring of children in the community. In order to understand where our school is going, it is important to remember where we have been. Let's take a look back through all of our important growths and changes through the years.
In the mid-1990s, the building underwent a new addition. WES initially serviced K-3, but quickly added 4th grade students by the end of the 1990s. We also shared our space with staff and students from Jefferson during the late 1990s as they also went through renovations to their building.
In the early 2000s, 5th grade was added to our building and has been here ever since that time. Kindergarten did leave us from 2006-2010, but in the fall of 2010, those students have returned to our building and remain here still to this day.
From 2004-2010, Mr. Anthony Moyer was Wesciosville's building principal. He left in 2010 to take over our district's newest building, Willow Lane Elementary. Our current principal, Mrs. Tara Desriderio, came to us from her previous role as building principal at Lower Macungie Elementary School. She joined our school community in the fall of 2010.
Each year we have a wide variety of community activities. We host Meet the Teacher Night in the fall. During our May Open House, parents and students visit with the faculty and staff to get a picture of what students have learned throughout the year. In addition to the Open House activities, our community shares their cultural heritage with other families in sharing food, songs and dance at our Multi-Cultural Night.
Our staff and students are involved in a wide array of activities throughout the school year. These include activities during school and many that occur after school hours. All of these experiences lend to a rich, diverse educational experience for our school community.
The faculty, staff and local community members volunteer to work with students in many after school activities. These activities have included, but are not limited to the Green Thumb Club, the Art Club and holiday caroling.
Wescosville Elementary School is vibrant in the area of the arts. Students in all grade levels perform a musical presentation at one of our monthly assemblies throughout the year. Twice a year our 5th grade students and staff present a show at Lower Macungie Middle School. In December, our 5th grade presents a winter holiday concert. In May, they present a musical. Additionally, all of our students participate in an annual art show, in conjunction with Open House and our Multi-Cultural Fair. Dozens of 4th and 5th grade children each year participate in band and orchestra.
New innovations prepare our students for the world of tomorrow. During school hours our students and staff utilize a wide variety of technological resources, which includes two Mac laptop labs, two sets of Flip video cameras, a Netbook lab, a set of PC laptops, wireless internet access, state of the art Moodle software and groundbreaking Smartboard technologly.
On a daily basis, students and staff are engaged in a wide variety of learning activities that include the President's National Science, Technology, and Engineering and Mathematics initiative. Project-based learning is another core instructional practice that is seen daily within all of our classrooms. This process is a hands-on approach to learning where students learn from a wide variety of activities, rather than only reading about topics in a book. One of the major projects from 2009-2010 was our second grades' butterfly garden. This area is located behind our school next to our recess yards. It is adjacent to our school's large pumpkin patch and the vibrant vegetable gardens.
Life at Wescosville Elementary over the past twenty years has seen many transformations, but you can always count on a few certainties. These unshakeable certainties include our dedication to learning, to our local community and most importantly to the children of East Penn School District. We all want the very best for our children and for their futures. The East Penn School District is an excellent organization in which you may educate your child in preparation for a successful future. And Wescosville Elementary School is a great first stepping-stone towards every families' cherished goal.
