Fourth Grade Curriculum

Language Arts/Reading/DOL

In fourth grade, students continue to develop strategies to effectively use language. Through journal writing, question of the day, book reports, and writing prompts, they learn to write and speak for a  specific purpose. Students learn to become strategic readers by identifying the elements of a story. They read expository material for specific information. Study skills include the use of reference materials, interpreting graphs and diagrams, how to locate information within their textbooks, and test-taking skills.   Vocabulary development continues to include the refinement of phonetic and decoding skills. Word analysis strategies include: homonyms, antonyms, synonyms, analogies, multiple meaning and compound words. Students expand their vocabulary by learning strategies for identifying unfamiliar words.

Reading comprehension skills taught include: understanding fiction and nonfiction reading selections, identifying main ideas, sequencing events, recalling details, making predictions, genre study, drawing inferences, and understanding cause-and-effect relationships.  Fourth graders continue to learn and practice the steps of the writing process.  Proper grammar, spelling, and the mechanics of writing are taught to enable students to proofread and communicate more effectively.

Daily your child will complete a D.O.L. or Daily Oral Language.  They will have sentences to correct along with some other language skills each day.  We will go over these daily in class and your child will make corrections to his/her paper.  In addition to the D.O.L, the class will be given sentences from the Harcourt Storytown to reinforce the new grammar skills.  Your child will also be expected to use these skills as the students learn a variety of different types of writing this year.

Spelling

Each week your child will bring home a list of spelling words.  It's a good idea to keep these in your child's Homework folder to study each night.  The spelling words go along with our reading program Storytown.  You can find lists on this website to print if needed.  Interactive games can be found on my website so that your child will have fun ways to learn the words weekly.  Spelling homework will be assigned.  Be sure to look in your child's Homework assignment book for these assignments.  A Spelling pretest will be given with each new story and then a Spelling tests will follow.  The Spelling test date will be announced after each Spelling pretest.

Mathmatics

Fourth grade math continues to build on third grade math skills and more.  Addition and subtraction continues, place value and money, data, graphs, and probability, multiplication facts - 1 and 2 digit factors, time and measurement, division, geometry, fraction concepts - addition and subtraction, decimal concepts - addition and subtraction, and algebra and integers.  Lastly, problem solving is incorporated in all skill areas with a direct connection to real world problem solving.  It is important that your child reviews his/her math facts (addition, subtraction, mulitiplication and division) nightly.  Most of all......math is always taught with an element of fun!
