Emergency Information
p
The school nurse is responsible only for the emergency care of injuries and sudden illness that occur while the student is in school. The nurse is not available to diagnose or treat students who come to school with prior injuries or illnesses except in special cases under ongoing medical care and with the physician’s written orders.
If a student should require emergency transportation, ambulance service will transport the student to the nearest available hospital.
Students are reminded that the health room is to be used for emergency and emergent situations. Examples of these are injuries that result from accidents in school and illnesses that develop in school.
Students should not be requesting to leave class for treatment of piercings, tattos or for non-emergency situations that occurred over the weekend, at work or while at home. Also, sports-related injuries that require maintenance treatment (i.e. to injured areas and medications) require a note from a physician that is co-signed by a parent.
Students are also remined to wear appropriate footwear and to get adequate rest before coming to school.
We are aware that situations arise and need to be addressed. However, there is an increasing trend toward using the health room for all basic self-care needs. Addressing this problem early in the school year will help all students to have even more success this school year.
Medication
pAll medication, both prescription and non-prescription must be kept in the school health office.
p
Medication will be administered to students during school hours only when such medication is required and accompanied by a doctor’s order.
Cough drops are available to all students.
