Wescosville Elementary School Roeder Library

The Wescosville Elementary School Roeder Library houses a collection of approximately 25,000 books, periodicals, and videos for use by students and staff. The Roeder Library was named after Mrs. Ruth B. Roeder a 35 year EPSD teacher and ten year library volunteer and Accelerated Reader program coordinator.  She retired at the end of the 2008 school year after 45 years of service!  Mrs. Roeder donated many of the AR books in the library.

The library is open Monday through Friday from 8:40 AM -3:30 PM. It is staffed with volunteers, library aides, and a librarian. Throughout the year we hold many special programs and fun activities in the library. We also have spring and fall Scholastic Book Fairs in our library during conference week!

SOME HELPFUL FACTS:

  • Library classes are held weekly for all students.
  • Classes are 30 minutes long.
  • Depending on grade level and class assignments students may select from one to three books and/or periodicals. More selections are possible for class assignments.
  • Library materials are due on regularly assigned library days. In case of illness, snow days, or other scheduled activities, books should be returned ASAP: it's not necessary to wait for the next scheduled library day.
  • Students may visit the library any time during the school day, not just during assigned library times.
  • Overdue notices are printed weekly and sent home with students.

THE COLLECTION:
The library collection is divided into several areas: fiction, non-fiction, reference, biographies, and Accelerated Reader books. Fiction books are separated into easy (E) picture books, suitable for grades K-3, and chapture (FIC) books, suitable for grades 2-5. Non-fiction books are shelved together regardless of reading level, but easier books are designated with a gold star just above the spine label. Colored labels throughout the shelves indicate special book collections. Approximately 25% of the books in the Wescosville collection are Accelerated Reader (AR) books. These books are easily located by color coded labels at the top of the spines.

THE STAFF
The Wescosville Library is fortunate to have a large group of parent volunteers who donate their time to working in the library on alternating weeks. The PTO supplies a volunteer coordinator to help schedule volunteer activities related to the library.

The library has two part time aides who help with all aspects of library functions.

The librarian teaches classes 4 days a week at Wescosville and 1 day per week at Lower Macungie Elementary. Administrative time is divided between the two library collections.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS:
Wescosville Library participates in several special programs throughout the year.

Book Fairs are held during fall and spring conference weeks. PTO book fair chairpeople work with the librarian to coordinate fair activities.  Children and staff participate in a weeklong preview with fun activities centered on a theme which changes from fair to fair. Proceeds from the book fair directly support the library.

Visiting Authors or Performers visit the student body at Wescosville based on  programs that have been planned involving reading and/or the library.

ACCELERATED READER
The library houses more than 7,000 books designated for the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. AR books are circulated from regular library shelves or the AR book bins of the Roeder Collection. The Accelerated Reader program identifies the difficulty of books according to reading levels and point values. Student reading progress is supported and enhanced through constant monitoring and adjustment of reading levels and points. To learn more about the Accelerated Reader program visit the Renaissance Learning web site at www.renlearn.com.
