HEALTH SCREENINGS:

Growth - All students are weighed and measured, BMI (body-mass index) is calculated, and results are sent home to parents each year per state requirement.

Vision - Vision screening is provided each year to all children in Kindergarten through 12th grades.  If your child does not pass his/her vision screening, a referral will be sent home with the student.  The child should then be examined by an eye doctor for further evaluation and treatment if necessary.  Vision screening can be done on any student, at any time throughout the school year per parent or teacher request.

Hearing - Hearing screening is provided each year to children in Kindergarten, 1st through 3rd, 7th & 11th grades, and special ungraded classes. Hearing Screening is also provided for any grade-level student when requested by a parent or teacher.

Physical Examinations -Physical exams are a state requirement for children upon first entry into school Kindergarten/Grade 1 and Grades 6 and 11.  They are also required for new students entering the district from out of state.

HELPFUL INFORMATION REGARDING COMMUNICABLE ILLNESSES

A child will be excluded from school if it is suspected that he/she has a communicable condition. This includes skin rash, pink eye, impetigo, scabies, strep throat, etc.  If excluded, your child must present written permission from the examining physician for re-entry to school.

Chicken Pox

Period of Exclusion from school:

5 -7 days from the last crop of vesicles, and/or all vesicles are dry & crusted. No Physician note needed for re-entry. For more information go to the Chicken Pox Page on this website.  See photo       

Strep Throat Infection

Period of Exclusion from school:

Student may return 24 hours after initiating antibiotic therapy.  Student must be fever free without the aid of medication (Tylenol/ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours prior to returning to school. 

Ringworm/Tinea

Period of Exclusion from school:

There are many forms of ringworm. The most common form is tinea circinate which looks like a red/pink circular dry patch on the skin.  This has a very low degree of contagiousness and does not require exclusion from school, only proof of treatment and the area needs to be covered while at school. See photo

Impetigo

Period of Exclusion from school:

Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial infection which requires exclusion from school and treatment by a physician.  Nursing staff may exclude a student for suspected lesions until initiation of treatment and doctor note stating child is not contagious.  See photo

Conjuctivitis
( pinkeye)

Period of Exclusion from school:

Pink eye, or suspicion of pink eye, requires exclusion from school until proof of medical evaluation has been received.  Student may return to school 24 hours after initiation of therapy if pink eye is diagnosed.  See photo

Pediculosis ( Lice )

Until treated with an appropriate shampoo, and all nits (eggs) are removed.  No physican note needed for re-entry to school.  However, student must be examined by health room staff before
returning to class.
