In October of 2018, the Pennsylvania legislature passed Act 150: Sun Protection of Students and Application of Nonprescription Sunscreen, which is now part of the Public School Code of 1949. This Act stipulates that schools shall allow the possession, application or use by a student of a non-aerosol topical sunscreen product approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use during school hours and at school sponsored events. The Act proceeds to stipulate the conditions under which this may occur:
- Product is non-aerosol, topical, non-prescription, approved by FDA
- Parent/Guardian must first submit completed authorization form which will be reviewed and approved by the building nurse
- Privilege may be revoked if student does not adhere to safety precautions delineated on the required authorization form.
The form is available from our school nurse, Mrs. Terri Hildebrand. Under no circumstances should school staff be applying sunscreen on students. Students may not possess sunscreen unless a permission form has been submitted.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have regarding this matter.
