Fourth grade students at Macungie Elementary School recently completed a novel study of “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. This is the true life story of Salva Dut, a young man who escaped war in Southern Sudan and eventually started his own foundation, Water for South Sudan, to help build wells and provide clean water to the people of Southern Sudan. After reading the book, our students were so inspired that they created their very own fundraiser to help support the building of a well. Students sold paper water droplets to raise money. For each dollar raised, students also agreed to walk a lap, which is symbolic of the daily walk to water that many girls in Africa do each day. Overall, students raised $567 to donate to Water for South Sudan. On Wednesday, June 13th, students walked 567 laps around the school, which was approximately 8 laps per student.
