In response to a large number of parent requests for PowerSchool access, the Office of Technology sent a communication to families to provide an access code to PowerSchool if they had not already set up an account. Due to an error, families received a link to multiple pages containing: Student ID number, Student Name, and an Access Code and Password that only worked if the parent has never had a PowerSchool Parent account in the past.
East Penn was notified about the messaging error by concerned parents. The PowerSchool Parent Portal and Schoology Parent Portals were immediately closed by 9:50 AM. The links that were sent out through SwiftK12 were also immediately disabled by the Office of Technology. A brief statement was released by the district letting families know we were aware and rectifying the situation.
We have confirmed that no student information inside the portal was accessed by anyone other than designated parent/guardians. While the portal was closed, we reset all access codes for any families who still need to create a Parent/Guardian account in both PowerSchool and Schoology. An access code is not the same as a username/login and password. It is only used to create a new account and requires that parents verify information to gain access.
What was also shared in the mass file was an association between student ID number and student legal name. The ID number is a local ID number utilized by our students. In EPSD systems, students utilize usernames that are composed of elements of their name e.g. jsmith21 to login. For instance, students use the “jsmith21” login to access district devices, the Google Suite, PowerSchool, and Schoology. This login is combined with a unique alphanumeric password that does not contain their student ID number.
Students may use their ID number for library and cafeteria services, but this is in combination with the student’s school ID through the cafeteria or library checkout process.
After further assessment, no parent or student accounts were compromised. Therefore, passwords do not need to be reset. If a parent needs to create a PowerSchool or Schoology account and needs an access code, please contact the Office of Technology at 610.966.8380.
