On December 1, 2016, Wescosville Elementary was chosen as the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) model site for 2016-17. Wescosville was chosen for their efforts to improve behavioral health services for school-aged students. Area school districts will have the opportunity to have site visits at Wescosville to replicate the School-Wide Positive Behavior Support program that Principal Tara Desiderio embraced in 2012. Noteworthy in her application was the decrease in office discipline referrals by 53%. As one faculty member remarked, “School-Wide Positive Behavior Support training has taught us how to look at our school and identify needs. It has created a positive climate in our building. With everyone working toward the same goals and having the same high expectations, we make the most of our instructional time.” Mrs. Desiderio will be presenting at the PBIS Implementer’s Forum in May.
