On December 21st, Mrs. Desiderio, Wescosville Elementary Principal, received an early holiday gift/news that Wescosville’s proposal was chosen for a $12,000 grant. Wescosville was one of 57 grant applicants for the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of Special Education Performance Grant: School Based Behavioral Health, Expansion of School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support. Donna Halpin, PATTAN Network Facilitator, wrote a letter in support of Wescosville’s proposal. She stated, “Through action planning… the team recognized the need to increase the inclusion of family members in the SWPBIS system. This application will support those efforts. They continue to strive to improve the supports for all students and families and each step they have taken has been with School staff, PBIS team and Administration Support. This grant would support their effort to continue to include families and grow relationships with their community.”
Mrs. Desiderio is very excited to have this opportunity. Working with Mind and Body Institute (www.themindandbodyinstitute.com), an after school program was developed called, “MindFIT”. The MindFIT school-based program was tailored to Wescosville’s needs. It delivers many of the most important social and emotional teachings necessary for healthy child development. Impactful lessons in the areas of Functional Exercise, Mindfulness, Yoga for Children and Coordination and Timing are taught. These skills support better attention, stress management, emotional responsiveness, strength, and agility as well as enthusiasm for learning.
The grant will also be used to inservice teachers on equity in education. Mrs. Desiderio and Dennine Leshinsky, Instructional Specialist, will again be presenting at the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports conference in Hershey in May. Congratulations to everyone involved.
