Poppy Daws, Willow Lane Elementary 4th Grade student, won the 2016 BIC Fight for Your Write Principal for a Day Contest. Poppy’s story about what she would do if she was principal for a day won her a $10,000 scholarship and created a special day between her 4th grade Willow Lane classmates and a group of seniors from the Village of Willow Lane.
If principal for a day, Poppy wanted to connect her classmates with seniors in her community. Poppy wanted her classmates to interview seniors in local nursing homes about their life, lessons they’ve learned, things they find hard, and what makes them happy. So, they did! Mrs. Julia Dweck, Poppy’s Gifted and Talented teacher, arranged for the Village of Willow Lane seniors to join their class for a fun filled afternoon of student interviews. Students enjoyed the many stories shared by their new senior friends all while learning interview skills.
Poppy’s winning entry taught her classmates to listen to their elders because they always have a great story to tell. From learning about life on a farm to stories from a WWII vet, these students learned so much from their afternoon with their new friends. “They know things,” said Poppy. They sure do, Poppy! Thank you for creating this special “senior moment.”
