For four days, 24 staff members attended the National School Press Association’s Fall Conference in Washington D.C. for training, competition, and sessions with journalism professionals. Students heard Chuck Todd from Meet the Press, met with freedom of expression advocate and Supreme Court case icon Mary Beth Tinker, listened to Pulitzer Prize-winning writers and photographers, and studied design trends – while squeezing in time to tour the Newseum, see pandas at the zoo, and stop by the National Cathedral.
Six students captured national recognition from the NSPA in write-off competitions, an impressive accomplishment: Heather Fabritze, superior in news writing; Nate Garcia, excellent in editorial cartooning; Rylan Bassett, honorable mention in commentary writing; Emma Brashear, honorable mention in sports action photography; Kristen Heilenman, honorable mention in newspaper editing & headline writing; and Aidan Springs, honorable mention in press law & ethics.
