By Coach Scott Bechtel
Our boys traveled to Easton to take on the mighty Red Rovers. They are a no-nonsense, run straight up the middle, hit you as hard as they can type of team. We stood up to the fight and hit right back.
Reilly Bechtel again lead the team with two TD’s. He had extra incentive to play hard as his family tree came from three generations of Easton Football. Emmaus scored first with a beautiful end run from Reilly. The defense then played solid against strong runs, again lead by linebacker Trystan Fulmer. Ty Durette came up with several huge ‘uncatchable’ catches. Rafy Torrero put the Hornets ahead 12-8 at the end of the first half by creating separation from his defender and catching a beautiful deep ball thrown by Sam Stephan.
Our first half was not played up to our high standards and many heads were hung low despite outscoring the Rovers. The boys were challenged see this close game as an awesome battle. The Rovers are a worthy opponent. “This is the type of game you live for. The reason that you train hard. This is the game you want to be in! Now let’s see who had fight left in them and can deliver the better performance in the second half!”
The Hornets responded to this epic challenge. And just like last week’s B game, this game proved to be a nail biter with Emmaus and Easton exchanging heavy blows throughout. With less than two minutes left in the game, Easton scored on a TD pass to go up 14-12. Our boys had to dig deep. Many playing both ways. Many physically hurting or simply exhausted from the toll of battle. With just over a minute left. Sam threw a zipping screen pass to Reilly who was immediately tackled….but wait, he wasn’t…as he slipped his tackler and all out sprinted 71 yards springing free at the 20-yard line with a crushing block from Ty who raced down the field alongside him. The Emmaus fans and team exploded in cheers!
The game clock stopped working and the referee had to keep the time from then on. With only over a minute left the Hornet defense held off seven ensuing Easton pass plays to seal the victory. After each play everyone yelling, “What’s the time!! How much time left?!?!” And finally the referee waved his hands indicating the game was over. Chaos ensued on the sidelines again. Another sweet victory!
