Redefine Redesign Reimagine

Introduction

The East Penn School District is developing a Districtwide Feasibility Study to help plan for the future of our school facilities. It is the goal of the District to provide educational facilities that reflect our commitment to supporting the success of all EPSD students. The three priorities in achieving this goal are:

  1. Equity in educational experience;
  2. Adequate capacity in academic facilities; and,
  3. Facilities that support instructional programs e.g. the arts, technology education, science, wellness etc.

The district administration would like to gather feedback from the school community. Please review the information below and respond to our brief survey. All responses will be reviewed carefully to assist in making decisions on future facility improvements.

Several strategies are being considered: redistricting, grade realignment, renovations and new construction. Of the four strategies, redistricting is considered to be necessary regardless of the options chosen.

Redistricting is a process that redefines the school attendance boundaries for each school based on changes in the populations of the surrounding neighborhoods. Changes to boundaries can be implemented over time as students progress through grades.

Background Information

For survey background, below are considerations to address elementary, middle, and high school capacity and functionality concerns:

1. K-8 Realignment

Realign the current kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school enrollment (K-5) to a kindergarten through fourth grade enrollment (K-4). A 5-6 Center would be created at Eyer Middle School. A 7-8 Center would be created at Lower Macungie Middle School.

2. Elementary School Expansions

a. Alburtis: classroom additions and expansion of the cafeteria;
b. Lincoln: classroom additions and expansion of the cafeteria;
c. Wescosville: classroom additions and expansion of the cafeteria;

3. Middle Schools

a. Lower Macungie Middle School and Eyer Middle School: If a K-4 realignment is chosen, combining all 5th grade with 6th grade at Eyer and moving all 7th grade and 8th grade to Lower Macungie will require additions to accommodate approximately 150-300 more students at both middle schools.
b. Lower Macungie Middle School and Eyer Middle School: In a K-5 grade alignment, an addition to accommodate approximately 150-300 more students would be necessary at Eyer; an addition to the cafeteria at Lower Macungie.

4. Emmaus High School

a. Renovations and additions to existing high school.
b. New high school on existing site in Emmaus.
c. New high school on district owned property in Alburtis.
