Parent Teacher Conference Tips

Tips for a Successful Parent Teacher Conference

Parent-teacher conferences provide an opportunity to find out how your child is adjusting to the new school year and to get to know his/ her teachers.

This is a time set aside for you to ask questions, to share and learn from one another and to find out how your child is performing within the classroom. Ultimately it is an opportunity to help your child to be successful.

These tips may help you as you prepare for the conference

  • Ask your child if there is anything that he/she would like you to discuss with the teacher.
  • Think ahead about what you want ( goals) out of this conference and the questions you may want to ask. Write them down and bring them along.
  • Arrive on time or a few minutes early.
  • Begin with positive comments about the teacher or classroom.
  • Time is limited so try to stick to topics which are related to the conference.
  • Keep your emotions under control.
  • Be open to suggestions and ask what you can do to support your child at home.
  • Take notes about what has been discussed to share with your child.
  • Remember that the conference may run short before you get to discuss everything that you had intended.  You can contact the Team leader or your child’s grade level counselor to arrange a time later in the year to confer.
  • Express appreciation for the conference.
  • Remember to have a great, productive conference.
