Dear East Penn Community,
On behalf of the East Penn administrative team, I am excited to welcome you back to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope that your summer was relaxing and you share my optimism as we prepare to greet 8,200 students on August 26th. The upcoming school year will bring about new faces, new challenges, and much anticipation of great things to come.
We will continue to focus on providing learning experiences that foster the habits and skills that are reflected in the EPSD Profile of a Graduate. In addition to developing students’ academic competencies, we want our students to develop skills that will empower them for the future. The East Penn Comprehensive Plan, approved by PDE in December 2018, identifies our district priorities as organizational culture, instructional practice, social and emotional learning, and civic learning. I am proud to highlight improvements for the upcoming school year that are aligned to these priorities:
- Technology access and equity: EPSD Connects Plan– As the last stage of the original technology plan, we will provide students in grades 3, 6, 9, and 12 with devices, thus creating a learning environment in which every student in grades 3 through 12 has equitable access to technology and information. Our priority is to support teachers and students in the purposeful integration of technology in teaching and learning.
- Assessment and grading: Elementary Report Card– We have been refining our grading and assessment practices at all grade levels. The elementary level will be implementing a new reporting system that communicates students’ academic and behavioral progress and informs future learning goals.
- Student Information System: PowerSchool Implementation– East Penn will utilize PowerSchool as its new student information system. This system offers many enhancements over the former system, and we will continue to support all users in the implementation process.
- Social and Emotional Learning: Communities in Schools– We are fortunate to expand our partnerships with Communities in Schools (CIS) and add a CIS Site Coordinator at both middle schools. The site coordinators will enhance our ability to address students’ mental health needs.
- Organizational Culture: “You Matter”– Positive relationships are the foundation of our organization. We will continue to implement ways to foster healthy communication, collaboration, and appreciation for each other.
I appreciate that change, while positive, may disrupt our routines and create uncertainty. I trust that we will navigate these changes with optimism and support for each other. It is my privilege to be a part of an educational community that continues to focus on improving the quality of educational experiences that we provide to all students.
