Willow Lane Elementary Dedicates Historical Storybook Trail

The concept for the Willow Lane Historical Storybook Trail originated from Dr. Anthony Moyer, who entrusted the execution of the project to gifted support teacher, Julia Dweck, and her fifth grade students. Today marked the highly anticipated opening of the trail, representing the culmination of the fifth-grade students’ tireless research and meticulous preparation. Guided by the expertise of Sarajane Williams and Rich Gorton from the Lower Macungie Historical Society, the students embarked on a fascinating 6-week journey through the history of their school’s surrounding local area. Students included: Abigail Reichart, Charlotte Smyth, Walter Gutekunst, Elliott Holmes, Mariam Ben Yahia, Kaila St. Valle, Madison McGinniss, Alyssa Powell, and Emilio Benalcazar.

Sarajane Williams and Rich Gorton visited the school, sharing captivating stories from the past and utilizing Sarajane’s book, “Tour Around the Township: A Historical Look at Lower Macungie,” as a resource. The students were assigned different topics of interest, ranging from Reuben Schmoyer’s farm to Lloyd Kratzer’s Potato wholesaling business, allowing them to explore various individuals well known to the region’s history.

To deepen their connection with the rich Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, the students wholeheartedly embraced the learning of the traditional song “Schnitzelbank.” Through a dedicated study of German pronunciation and diligent practice with Mrs. Dweck, they honed their skills to perfection, ready to join Dylan Peters who accompanied them on guitar in a captivating rendition of this beloved German folk song. Their melodic performance infused the exploration of Pennsylvania Dutch culture with a lively and authentic musical spirit.

Following this enchanting musical experience, the event continued to delight attendees with a delightful feast of traditional Pennsylvania Dutch foods and refreshments. The tantalizing spread included mouth watering delicacies like shoofly pie, funny cake, whoopie pies, ring bologna, and a local favorite, birch beer. Guests revelled in the opportunity to savor these culinary delights, immersing themselves fully in the flavorful traditions of the region. The combined celebration of music and gastronomy served as a vibrant testament to the students’ commitment to preserving and cherishing the vibrant heritage of the Pennsylvania Dutch community.

The grand opening of the outdoor Willow Lane Historical Trail garnered the presence of esteemed guests, among them Ron Beitler, Commissioner and proprietor of the Rising River Brewery, Sarajane Williams, President of the Lower Macungie Historical Society, and County Executive Phil Armstrong. During the event, County Executive Phil Armstrong presented the students with a proclamation, honoring their remarkable achievement in documenting the history of the area. This special occasion offered students and attendees a unique chance to fully immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of the region’s past.
