In 1996, the hit movie “Twister” dramatized an advanced alert system for tornadoes using the fictional “Dorothy,” an instrument designed to be placed into the path of a tornado and pulled into its “suck zone.” Hollywood’s story was a copy of real-life research projects ongoing at the time, and today portable weather stations are still playing a big role in tornado research, this time with an Emmaus High School graduate in the driver’s seat.
