Remote Learning Days
Remote Learning Days count as official school days. Participation and assignment completion are mandatory for all students in grades K–12.
Overview
Remote learning days, formerly referred to as Flexible Instructional Days (FID), are utilized when severe weather prevents students and staff from safely reporting to school. The district will notify all families via standard communication channels whenever a Remote Learning Day is scheduled.
During these days, the district operates on an asynchronous remote learning model. Teachers will provide assignments and remain available for support, but coursework is designed for independent completion.
Elementary School Protocols
Grades K–5
Elementary students complete physical Remote Day Activities packets, which can also be accessed digitally on the East Penn Family Resource Page.
- Activity Distribution: Folders containing materials for Remote Learning Days 1 & 2 are sent home on October 5th to remain in the designated folder in student backpacks. Materials for Days 3, 4, & 5 are prepared and distributed by November 20th.
- Remote Learning Routine: Students complete the designated numbered packet for that specific day. Students receiving modifications or accommodations will receive all necessary supporting materials.
- Specialist Classes: Families log into Seesaw to check announcements and confirm the assigned Specialist Choice Board (Art, Music, PE, STEM).
- Teacher Support: Teachers are available during the school day via Google Meet, Seesaw messages, or email.
- Completion: Students should attempt all assignments on the remote day. If needed, teachers will provide additional support, guidance, and time upon returning to school.
Secondary School Protocols
Grades 6–12
- Assignments: Assignments are posted live at 8:30 AM in Schoology.
- Teacher Support: Teachers are available via email or Google Meet throughout the day.
- Completion: Students should attempt all assignments on the remote day. If needed, teachers will provide additional support, guidance, and time upon returning to school.

How is attendance recorded for a Remote Learning Day?
Attendance is determined by completing and submitting independent learning activities. K–5 students keep work in their designated folders and turn it in to their teacher upon returning to school. Students in grades 6–12 should complete assignments posted in Schoology.
What if my child is sick on a Remote Learning Day?
If a student is ill on a remote day, a three-day grace period is provided to complete and turn in assigned work.
What if my child struggles with work or needs help?
Students should attempt assignments to the best of their ability. Teachers are available during the day for support via email, Seesaw, or Google Meet, and will provide extra time and guidance when school resumes.
How are Special Education accommodations and IEP services handled?
Students who receive accommodations or modifications will be provided with all necessary supporting materials to complete their individualized learning during the remote day. Case managers monitor progress and offer targeted support or re-teaching as needed once students return to school.
What should we do if we experience technical issues or loss of power?
Elementary students complete physical paper activities. For secondary students experiencing internet or technical issues, notify the classroom teacher as soon as connectivity is restored. Teachers will accommodate disruptions once communicated.
How will families be notified when a Remote Learning Day is called?
The district notifies families through the district’s emergency notification system (SchoolMessenger), media outlets, and updates on the district website.
